Good food, breathtaking landscapes, crystal clear waters, cities of art, shopping … For how many other aspects is Italy famous all over the world? Obviously tourists love Italy and they increasingly choose it as a holiday destination.
Italian tourist flows
According to The survey on international tourism conducted by the Bank of Italy, Italy has emerged as one of the most popular destinations for travelers from all over the world. The art cities attract more than ever, but even seaside resorts impress foreigners who decide to spend their holidays here.
In 2017 there were 91 million presences (+ 6% the previous year) featured by an expenditure of 39.2 billion (+ 7.7% compared to 2016). While on the one hand the stays have shortened, on the other, the average daily expenditure has increased. German tourists confirmed their first place (14.7 million people), followed by Swiss (13.6 million)and French (12.4 million). Most of the attendance comes from Europe, but there are also substantial numbers from the USA, that registered 3.8 million people.
The 2018 estimates made by Cst for Assoturismo speak of further growth: an increase of 5.5% is expected for USA tourists, while for Australia and Latin America an increase of + 3.5% is expected, even data from Europe is on the rise: Germany + 2%, France + 2.5%, England + 2.5%.
What are tourists looking for?
The cities which attract most the tourists are Milan, Rome, Venice, Pisa, Naples, Palermo, Catania and Florence. The art and history of our country are still fundamental drivers for tourism but also shopping has some merits: the shopping-addicted mainly buy clothes, but also accessories, leather goods and cosmetics.
Italy straight to the pot
According to the Coldiretti Report 2018, food represents the added value of Italian holidays. Food and wine tourism is the reason for which around 110 million visitors, of whom 57% are foreigners, come to Italy. Italian cuisine is able to move about 30 billion euros a year.
